COVID-19 Response: Hardship Relief
Hardship Relief Announcement

The COVID-19 pandemic is inflicting significant harm on many New Jersey residents. On March 28th, Governor Murphy issued a press release announcing an initiative to help ensure that no one loses their home during this public health crisis.
Under Governor Murphy’s proposal, New Jerseyans who are struggling financially as a result of COVID-19 may be eligible for the following relief upon contacting their financial institution:
90-Day Grace Period for Mortgage Payments
Credit Union of New Jersey will offer, consistent with applicable guidelines, mortgage payment forbearances of up to 90 days to borrowers economically impacted by COVID-19. In addition, we will:
- Provide borrowers a streamlined process to request a forbearance for COVID-19-related reasons, supported with available documentation;
- Confirm approval of and terms of forbearance program; and
- Provide borrowers the opportunity to request additional relief, as practicable, upon continued showing of hardship due to COVID-19.
No Negative Credit Impacts Resulting from Relief
Credit Union of New Jersey will not report derogatory tradelines (e.g., late payments) to credit reporting agencies, consistent with applicable guidelines, for borrowers taking advantage of COVID-19-related relief.
Moratorium on Initiating Foreclosure Sales or Evictions
For at least 60 days, Credit Union of New Jersey will not initiate foreclosure sales or evictions, consistent with applicable guidelines.
Relief from Fees and Charges
For at least 90 days, Credit Union of New Jersey will waive or refund at least the following for members who have requested assistance:
- Mortgage-related late fees; and
- Other fees, including early CD withdrawals (subject to applicable federal regulations).

As a valued member of Credit Union of New Jersey, should you experience financial difficulty as a result of this pandemic, please call us at 609.538.4061 (8:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. Monday – Friday; 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. Saturday) to discuss your options. We offer a number of hardship relief options for which members may be eligible depending on your product(s) and needs.
If you are unable to make your payment, we may have options to help you navigate this unprecedented time.
Credit Union of New Jersey will consider assisting those impacted members by waiving or refunding fees associated with deposit accounts or lending products, including credit cards and mortgages. If you’re concerned about making consumer loan, auto loan, credit card or mortgage loan payments, we have a variety of programs available to assist you. Solutions may include the ability to postpone payments for a period of time.
You may be able to postpone payments for up to 90 days with no late fees during the postponement period if you have one of the following products:
- Auto Loan
- Unsecured Signature Loan
- Credit Card
- Unsecured Line of Credit
- Home Equity Loan
- Home Equity Line of Credit
